Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai Admission Process

The much revered institution in India, Govt. Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai offers Dental Sciences courses which are affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The college offers various programs such as BDS, MDS, and Diploma courses. The admission process at Government Dental College Mumbai has a stringent procedure to hone only the best into the dental courses. For undergraduate admission, it gets admission scores resulting from the National Eligibility Combined Entrance Test (NEET). Normally, NEET is taken in May of each academic year, and results released by the mid of June. Those students wanting to sit for this examination then have to register for counseling once the NEET results are announced. Academic years usually kick off in August to September once the results are out.

For BDS minimum eligibility, students must meet the standard for grades in 10th and 12th where mandatory subjects are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, be of the minimum age, and have scored above the cutoff in the NEET examination. For postgraduate (MDS) admissions, candidates must have obtained their BDS degree from an approved institution and have qualified in the NEET-MDS entrance examination. This principle of merit-based admission is also applied to state and all-India candidates separately. One such criterion in BDS admissions is that 8 percent of the seats in the BDS program are earmarked for outside candidates, with the percentage increasing to 39% for MDS programs.

Application Process

The application process in Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai varies as per different programs:

For BDS:

  1. Appear for the NEET-UG exam.
  2. Qualify in NEET by scoring above cut-off.
  3. Register for state-level or all-India counseling, as applicable.
  4. Fill in the choice of college and course during counseling.
  5. Report to the college for document verification and admission, if allotted a seat.

For MDS Admission Eligibility:

  1. Register for NEET-MDS after completing the BDS program. 
  2. Those qualifying above the cutoff score in NEET-MDS qualify for admission. 
  3. Enroll for the state PG dental counseling or All-India PG dental counseling. 
  4. Participate in the counseling process and select Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai as per preference and availability. 
  5. Finish the admission process if allotted to the college.

For diploma courses: 

  1. Keep in check with the college website or contact the admission office regarding the announcement for the application. 
  2. Procure and fill the application form for that specific diploma program. 
  3. Return the filled application form, along with the relevant documents, by the close of the due date. 
  4. Attend any entrance test or interview, if carried out by the college. 
  5. On selection, fulfill the formalities for admission at the college.

Admission Process Degree Wise

BDS: The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course at Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai has a sanctioned intake of 125 students. The admissions for this course would be done based on the result of NEET followed by a processing of registration for counseling purposes. This program runs for 5 years and has a compulsory one-year rotatory internship at the end.

MDS: The MDS programs offered by the college come in different branches, each with variations in the overall number of seats allocated for it. Such branches include:

  1. MDS Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge: 10 seats
  2. MDS Periodontology: 5 seats
  3. MDS Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics: 5 seats
  4. MDS Oral Pathology and Microbiology: 5 seats
  5. MDS Oral Medicine Diagnosis Radiology: 5 seats
  6. MDS Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics: 3 seats
  7. MDS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: 3 seats
  8. MDS Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry: 3 seats

Admission into MDS programs is principally done from the NEET-MDS merit list and counseling. An MDS course is for a duration of three whole years.

Diploma Courses: The college offers two diploma courses, namely: Diploma in Dental Hygienist: 10 seats Admission to these diploma courses is based on merit in the qualifying examination and follows a different admission procedure.

General required documents include: - 

  • NEET scorecard (for BDS and MDS)
  • 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
  • BDS degree certificate and completion certificate of internship (for MDS)
  • Category certificate (if applicable) 
  • Domicile certificate 
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Recent passport-size photographs.

NEET BDS cut off in 2019 is not yet available.But in 2018 the cut off for Government Dental College, Mumbai for 30% state quota for UR was 472 and for OBC it was 466.For 70% regional quota the cut off for OBC was 442.According to this you need 480 or above as cut off changes every year depending on number of candidates appeared, number of seats available etc.
