Satish Chandra Dhawan Government College, Ludhiana Facilities Details: Hostel, Campus, Infrastructure, Library, Canteen

A Free Wi-Fi facility is available for faculty and students on the college campus to keep them updated in this digital world.

Shri Guru Arjan Dev Library of the college is fully automated using the updated software Soul-3.0. There is also the facility of the N-list programme where faculty and students can access all the reference material online. The library building has two storeys, well stocked with the latest books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as e-books and e-journals. The library has more than 1,07,400 books, 6300 e-journals, 2 lakh eBooks, subscriptions to 4 journals, 20 newspapers, and 40 magazines. The first floor is devoted to the reading room. In addition to the central library, the departments have their departmental libraries where the students can get the course-related books. A separate library for evening college with 6230 books is also offered by the institution for Evening College. The institution also provides the facility of membership of the Extension Library of Panjab University Chandigarh established at the Regional Centre of Panjab University Ludhiana.

The college has a departmental-based laboratory facility for the students.

The college has a very spacious and fully air-conditioned Auditorium named Sahir Auditorium to commemorate our illustrious alumnus the Legendary Poet / Shair Sahir Ludhianvi. It has a capacity of 450 persons.

The campus offers a canteen facility to its students, staff and visitors. It has a large sitting area and a separate hall for the staff and visitors. Good quality food products/items are offered for sale. The Canteen Committee controls the allotment of the canteen contract, quality of the items, cleanliness of the serving, preparing area, and the rates.

There is the facility of a medical room for providing first aid to students in case the need arises.

The college has an excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students.

The college has a Gym facility for the students.

The college is committed to offering resourceful infrastructure for the holistic and all-round development of students. It provides adequate facilities for indoor and outdoor sports as well as other student and faculty support amenities. There is a hockey ground which has a history of hosting international matches. It has a 400-meter track having a capacity of 1500 spectators, a football ground, and a volleyball court having state of an art lighting system and net enclosure that boasts of producing sportspersons of international repute. A cricket pitch is there for organizing cricket matches/tournaments along with eight net practice pitches for practice sessions. There are four Sports Wings: Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, and Handball. There are free hostel arrangements for sports wing players. In the session 2022-23, college students won medals in different kinds of sports such as Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, Wrestling, Cricket, Skating, Taekwondo, Karate, Weight lifting, etc.

The Alumni Association of SCD Govt. College Ludhiana has been playing a great role in offering a platform to the old students of the college to reconnect themselves with their alma mater and rekindle the flame of intimacy with the institution. To give the Association a wider scope and to enliven and strengthen the basic bond between the teacher and the taught, the membership has been extended to the present and ex-faculty members and former Principals of the college. The Alumni Association has been holding Alumni Meets regularly and successfully. As per the constitution of the Alumni Association, the Principal in the chair would be the ex-officio President of the Association and the Vice-Principal would be the Senior Vice-President.

The college has ample space for providing parking space to its students, staff, and visitors. There is a separate two-wheeler parking lot for boys and girls and a dedicated parking lot for the faculty and visitors.

There are two Girls’ Common Rooms for recreational activities for girl students. Newspapers, magazines, and other general study materials are available there for spending free time between classes.

The campus has a small tuck shop near the open-air theatre where students can have general items, and stationary items from within the campus. It also provides a photostat facility at very nominal charges to the students. The Canteen Committee controls the allotment of the contract, the quality of the items, and the rates.

Employability is becoming increasingly central to the mission and functioning of colleges and universities spurred on by national and supranational agencies and demands of marketization. Based on the above philosophy, SCD Government College has a dynamic career counseling and placement cell. The career counseling cell, with the help of various agencies and institutions, organizes seminars to make students aware of various career opportunities in the private and public sectors. The students are provided information about various competitive exams and how to crack them. The placement cell has organized various on-campus and off-campus drives in the last 6 months with companies like D Mart, OM Careers, Parshottam Associates, and Arora Iron and Steel Rolling Mills. Around 70 students were able to get placement because of these placement drives.

The Music Club

Music Club focuses on the cultivation of musical talent. Students get to participate and are exposed to various musical activities throughout the academic years. They develop and acquire a rich array of musical skills.

The Red Ribbon Club

The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) is an international symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness. The club aims to provide a platform for youth to contribute towards the control and prevention of HIV/ AIDS, tuberculosis, and drug menace as well as promote voluntary blood donation among youth. The Red Ribbon Club operates under the guidelines of the Directorate of Youth Services, Ludhiana, the Government of Punjab. The objective of the club is to prepare the youth as peer educators and agents of change by developing their skills in leadership and team building. Under this, quiz, poster making, slogan writing, and collage-making competitions are organized at the college and district levels.

NCC;

The college offers NCC as an activity. There are two Wings of NCC in the college - Air Wing and Army Wing. Air Wing is for both, boys and girls where whereas Army Wing is only for boys. 

NSS:

The National Service Scheme was started by the Government of India, Ministry of Education and Culture, in collaboration with the State Government in the year 1969. The college runs four NSS units for boys and girls. Around 400 students enroll in NSS every year. Guided by the motto 'Not Me but You,' the volunteers uphold the tradition of selfless service. Apart from one-day camps and seven-day camps, NSS units also organize many other philanthropic activities to sensitize students towards societal issues.
