Gemology, in simpler words, is the study of gems. But it certainly has a lot more to it. In gemology, you not only find gems but also identify its origins, grade it and evaluate it. The identification, evaluation and processing of gemstones have become one of the most demanding lines of study these days. Eligibility Criteria for UG Courses:
Students applying for B.Sc. in Gemology or B.Des. in Jewellery Design must have completed their 10+2 examination from a recognised board in India.
Students applying for B.Sc courses must have passed XII level in Science Stream.
Students must appear for the entrance examinations as prescribed by the respective colleges.
Eligibility Criteria for PG Courses:
Students applying for postgraduate courses like M.Des and M.Sc. in Gemology must hold a graduate degree in the related subject with at least 55 percent from a recognised institute in India.
Students may also have to appear for entrance exams conducted by different colleges and universities as prescribed.
Eligibility Criteria for Diploma Course:
Students must have passed 10+2 level examination from a recognised board in India

Gemology Entrance Examination
There are many colleges and institutes in India which conduct entrance examinations as a means to select the most suitable candidates for the course. These entrance exams mainly test the aptitude and general knowledge of students in relation to the course that they are opting. Colleges that are offering Gemology too take entrance exams as a means to test the eligibility of the candidates. Some of the most famous ones are–
1. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Entrance Exam: Those students who want to become a gemologist can also pursue a B.Des course in Jewellery Designing from NIFT institutes across India. NIFT entrance exam is one of the biggest entrance exams in India for candidates who are seeking admission in fashion and designing.
2. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE): GATE exam the biggest exam for PG courses in Engineering, Science, and Architecture. Many colleges that are offering M.Sc. in Gemmology will accept GATE scores for admissions.
3. Aligarh Muslim University Entrance Examination: Aligarh offers a diploma in Gemology and Gemology is also a part of its B.Sc. in Geology course. In order to get admission into the college, students have to clear the entrance examination that might be conducted at an all India level or at the departmental level in Aligarh itself.
4. National Institute of Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT): NID DAT is one of the most important exams for candidates seeking admissions into various B.Des. and M.Des. courses including Jewellery Designing etc. In order to become a gemologist, you can take up B.Des./ M.Des in Jewellery Designing and try to pass the entrance examination.
5. GD Goenka Design Aptitude Test (GD Goenka DAT): GD Goenka DAT is conducted to test the calibre of the candidates seeking admission in B.Des/ M.Des/ B.Sc/ M.Sc courses in designing and management.
