Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry is a subspecialty under the branch of Oral Surgery in Dental Science. The course for this speciality is MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) in Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry.
This sub-branch of Oral Surgery deals with the causes, effects and treatments of dental diseases in children. The study involves dental diseases which occur during childhood, starting from birth till adolescence.
Pre-medical study of this speciality begins in the third year of BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) itself. After completing MDS, there is a hospital-based residency program as well.

For BDS, eligibility criteria are as follows:
Must have a minimum of 50% aggregate which includes subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in 12th
Must crack NEET Exam or any other university-specific entrance exam as per the released cut-offs
For MDS, eligibility criteria are as follows:
Must be holder of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree through BDS program with minimum 55% marks
Mandatory one-year internship

Entrance Exams for Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry
The entrance exams for BDS and MDS are of the objective type. BDS Exams contain questions from 11th, and 12th class syllabus of Science with Biology and MDS Exams include questions from BDS program (inclusive of pre-clinical speciality subjects).
For UG course, i.e. BDS, following entrance exams are conducted:
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)- NEET is a common eligibility test which is conducted for admissions in the medical colleges for different medical courses. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is considered by most of the colleges across India.
All India Common Entrance Test Bachelor of Dental Surgery [AICET BDS]- This is also a common entrance test conducted by Association of Private Minority Medical and Dental Colleges of Chhattisgarh.
Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University Common Entrance Test [IPU CET]- GGSIPU is a renowned university based in Delhi, India. Several colleges are affiliated to GGSIPU, and they offer a huge variety of courses. They conduct a common entrance test for UG and PG courses. Some GGSIPU colleges consider NEET scores as well.
Madhya Pradesh Dental Admission Test [MPDAT]- It is conducted under the Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges of Madhya Pradesh for undergraduate medical courses.

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) MDS- Conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), it is a common entrance test for MDS courses in colleges across India.

Bharti Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital MDS Entrance Exam (DENPET –II)- The college is located in Pune, and they consider NEET PG as well as DENPET-II (Dental PG Entrance Test) exam which is conducted by them.

BDS: The duration is five years which include four years of theoretical studies of the medical subjects and one year of mandatory internship for hands-on experience. The course focuses on the basics of Dentistry and some pre-medical subjects of the subspecialties of Postgraduate program.
MDS: The duration is three years which include one year of academics and two years of laboratory practices of surgery. Theory subjects and clinical subjects are included.
MDS is followed by a four-year residency program which is hospital-based. This is to ensure proper training before the licensed practice begins.
The evaluation in both the courses is based on the performance in written tests, lab-based practical, clinical examinations and viva. Along with that internship, performance is also considered.
