What is Oral Pathology
To understand the reasons behind dental ailments and issues, one must understand oral pathology. The mouth is one of the most significant organs of the body. It is a medium to consume food and a medium to express emotions. Poor dental hygiene and health can cause severe damage to this organ, and to understand the depth of this damage and how and why it occurs, oral pathology is employed. Oral Pathology (OP) is a specialism of dentistry, as well as pathology. The course is concerned with the pathology behind oral diseases and disorders and the impact it has on the tissues and the oral cavity. Oral Pathology involves the study of the soft tissues, dental hard tissues, and bones of the maxillofacial region. This is a very niche course in dentistry, one that not too many opt for.
Oral Pathology involves the study of the causation, pathogenesis, and clinical presentation of all reactive and infective processes involved in the oral cavity. The students work to clinically recognize the ailment and formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis. This course plays an instrumental role in understanding the reasons and logic behind dental health and the issues that come with it.
Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Oral Pathology
Bachelor’s- Interested candidates:
Must have passed 10+2 level from a recognized board.
Must have primary subjects of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Must secure a minimum of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology individually.
Master’s- Interested candidates:
Must have a Bachelor of Dental Science degree or other similar bachelor’s degrees.
Must have completed a 1-year compulsory rotating internship.
Entrance Exams for Oral Pathology
The admission into Oral Pathology courses is solely based on the individual’s performance in the common entrance exams conducted by the universities and institutions that offer this course. It is fully based on merit.
The candidates who qualify the written test are then called for rounds of interviews and counselling. If at the end of these rounds, the candidate is deemed worthy, their name will be on the merit list of the college’s admissions.
The common entrance test usually written for the course is NEET. Apart from this, the colleges may have their unique entrance exam procedures. These exams majorly consist of 200 multiple choice questions to be attempted in 3 hours, with negative marking.
Bachelor’s Course:
NEET: The National Eligibility Entrance Test is an entrance examination for students that wish to study undergraduate medical and dental courses in any government or private medical and dental college in India. The exam is overseen by the National Testing Agency.
Master’s Course
Depending on the college of choice, the institution may have its entrance exam procedure or will provide entrance depending on NEET scores. One compulsory necessity for all Master’s course aspirants is to have a BDS or any other equivalent degree in dental sciences. Some common entrance tests other than NEET include:
AIPGDEE: The All India Post Graduate Dental Entrance Examination is an entrance test written for different MDS courses all over India. This examination is conducted by AIIMS in Delhi and is a 3- hour long computer-based test with 200 multiple-choice questions.
BVP CET: The Bharti Vidyapeeth Common Entrance Test, is a national test conducted by the Bharti Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital in Pune. This exam also consists of 200 multiple-choice questions based on which the student is given admission into the college.

Hi Smriti,
There are tough chances for you to get oral pathology in any government college. Also the revision of cutoff highly depends on the no. of vacant seats after the first round of counseling. Last year they did revised it only once lower general category cutoff percentile by 25.1. So there is not much surity on number of times the cutoff will be revised.
