What is Urban Planning and Design

Urban Planning and Design is a very broad term that covers everything in a given landscape. This includes everything from buildings and landscape management to proper ensuring of air and water supply.

The people that practice Urban Planning and Design are called Urban Planners. Urban Planners need to plan everything, including proper transportation, distribution, and communication networks. The major degree for a person who wants to pursue Urban Planning and Development is a Bachelor of Planning (Urban Planning). The Bachelor's degree is a starters level course and teaches aspiring students the basics of Urban Planning.

If a student chooses to pursue higher studies in Urban Planning and Design, he or she can go for the Masters in Planning (Urban Planning), where the subjects and concepts such as Geographic Information System (GIS) are taught in much more depth.  

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Urban Planning and Design

For Undergraduate course-

To be eligible for the course of Bachelor of Planning, a student must fit the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria for a course in Urban Planning and Design are:

1. Candidate should complete his or her 10 + 2/ Senior Secondary from a recognized board.

2. Candidates must have a minimum aggregate percentile of at least 50%.

3. Candidate must have mathematics as a main subject. 

For Postgraduate course-

To be eligible for the course of Masters in Planning, a student must fit the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria for a course in Urban Planning and Design are: - 

1. The candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from a recognized university. 

2. The candidate must have an aggregate score of at least 55% at graduation level. 

Entrance Exams for Urban Planning and Design Courses

1. JEE Main

The Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) is a national-level entrance examination which is held for students who are seeking admission in the various engineering and technology-related courses.

2. UPSEE

The Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE) is an engineering entrance examination organized by the Uttar Pradesh state government for students looking for admission in the suitable colleges in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

3. Merit-based admissions

Many colleges and institutions grant admissions to students based on their performance at the high school level. Some students with good percentile aggregates are even granted scholarships. This mostly happens in private universities. 

Required Skillset for Urban Planning and Design

To gain admission in any course or to do any job, specific skills are required. These skills help a person to perform the job in a much better and enhanced way. To excel while doing a job, having these skills are a necessity.

The skills required in a person willing to pursue Urban Planning and Design as a career are: - 

1. Creativity – Creativity is the ability of a person to think out of the box when a problem or an opportunity presents itself. Creativity helps a person to find new ways to approach different tasks.

2. Design Skills – A person willing to pursue Urban Planning and Design must have impeccable precision and aesthetical skills. Architectural training only enhances the artistic side of a person.

3. Communication Skills – A person who is willing to take up a job in this industry must have good communication skills. They need to communicate with their team, workers, superiors and even clients.

4.  Advanced Mathematics – candidates should be good at mathematics as the job after the degree requires a good knowledge of mathematics as they have to deal with calculations, estimations and budgeting, among other things.
