The government polytechnic college, Purasawalkam was started in the year 1999 and this college is one of the prominent technical college in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This affiliated college recognised by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) contribute to impart quality education in the stream of engineering and technology. Located on a mere 5 acre land the college has an enrolment capacity of 558 students and is headed by 19 committed faculty. Currently, the institute offers three full time diplomas and these are: Information Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, and Computer Engineering. Therefore the Government Polytechnic College, Purasawalkam with its mission to deliver technical education has a significant responsibility of preparing young hopefuls into becoming engineers.

It has state of the art infrastructure and learning amenities make the college an ideal place to shape up the future generation. The library which forms an integral part of elevated academic concern boasts of a collection of about 4300 titles and 6400 volumes. It has an air-conditioned reading area that can accommodate users who are up to 50 people, and E-learning area with multimedia projectors and screens. NPTEL web video courses for students are available along with E-learning CDs prepared by NITTTR to promote a digital mode of learning. The library is completely automated employing ‘MODERNLIB’ software and has reprographic services. In thinking about physical health, the college offers uses for enjoying sports and a good gym. The IT infrastructure is well developed, computer laboratories regarding various specialisations are promptly available. Further, every department has their respective specialised laboratories such as CAD/CAM, EDC Laboratories and programming labs etc, by such way student has experiences of practical sessions.

The institute provides three distinct diploma programmes: Post secondary courses include; Diploma in Information Technology, Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering, and Diploma in Computer Engineering. All these programmes take three years to complete with the aim for providing students with skills and knowledge that the market demands.
