The PhD programme at IISER Pune is a blend of classroom curriculum, mentoring under-graduate students along with a major research component. The research scholars are expected to complete at least 16 credits of coursework within the first two semesters followed by a comprehensive examination to assess the student’s candidacy for PhD. They must deliver a departmental seminar and undertake tutoring activities in at least three courses (theory and/or laboratory courses). In the first two years, the student will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Upon the successful completion of the comprehensive examination and two years of JRF, the student will be eligible to receive a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for a maximum of another three years. The research progress of the student will be monitored on a yearly basis by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) involving the thesis supervisor (Convener) and two other faculty members. Upon completion of satisfactory research work (as construed by the RAC), the research scholar will deliver a research seminar regarding their work before the submission of thesis. The submitted thesis will be evaluated by external examiners before the conduct of viva-voce. Successful open defense of the thesis will lead to award of PhD degree during the annual convocation.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant should have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6 on of a 10-point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST and PD candidates) in their Master’s (MA/MSc/MPhil/BS-MS) Degree, in one or more of the subject which includes Sciences, Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Studies, Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Public Administration, Psychology, Sanskrit, Sociology, the Fine arts, and allied disciplines. Applicants from Architecture, Engineering/ Technology, and Medicine are eligible after a Bachelor’s degree (minimum four years).

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

Admission Details

Candidate MUST have qualified in any ONE of the following exams with any science or humanities/social sciences subject:

National Eligibility Test (NET) with valid* CSIR-JRF / UGC-JRF
CSIR-UGC NET-LS (from examination conducted during the year 2022 and 2023)
NBHM/GATE with a valid* score.

*The score/rank MUST be valid at least till August 01, 2024.

BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

Candidates in the final year of qualifying degree are also eligible to apply. However, their final selection is subject to their successful completion of the qualifying degree with the above mentioned requirements at the time of admission.

Shortlisted candidates will receive a separate email with the details of the interview that will take place on the IISER Pune campus. Final selection of students will be based on these interviews.
