What is NGO Management

NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) are critical in making the lives of needy people better and making the country a better place. NGO Management (NGO-M) becomes a critical topic then. The course deals with models of sustainable living, strategic consumption, operational planning, communication, and leadership.

The objectives of an NGO Management course is to provide managerial knowledge and skills related to NGOs to the students who opt for it. 

Ever since India’s independence, NGOs have played a vital role in helping the needy in the country. They provide aid to the people that need it and lift the socio-economic status of thousands of people. They work for a wide variety of socio-economic issues and provide relief through donations in their funds.

These NGOs can work in several sectors, such as child development, women’s rights, mid-day meals, sponsoring education, malnutrition, poverty, etc. 

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of NGO Management

Bachelor’s- Interested candidates:

●   Must have qualified the 10+2 level from a recognized educational university.

●   Can be a student of any stream and can pursue any course- BA, BBA, and B.Sc.

●   Must have a minimum of 45% aggregate.

Master’s- Interested candidates:

●    Can have any degree at the Bachelor’s level.

●   Must have achieved a 45% aggregate score. 

Entrance Exams for NGO Management

For the NGO Management course, there is no specific, nationwide entrance test. Every college and institution has their entrance examination procedure and pattern. These entrance examinations are followed by a series of personal interviews or group discussions based on which the students receive admission. After the completion of all the entrance procedures, the merit list of the college is released, which contains the names of the selected students.

Most of the entrance exams consist of logical reasoning and general aptitude questions, along with questions relevant to the course itself. Some institutions offering the NGO Management course are the Amity Institute of NGO Management, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Madurai Kamaraj University, and Karl Kuebel Institute of Development Education, among several others. 

Required Skillset for NGO Management

NGO Management students provide vital services to society, and for this, they require certain soft skills apart from theoretical knowledge and experience in the field. Among these, a few important skills for NGO-M students include:

• Communication Skills: An NGO Management student must have exemplary communication skills. This is a necessity for NGOs because they have to work with affected people, with different departments, and for sponsorship. They must be able to communicate efficiently and empathetically with each of these sections to be able to effectively help the people and society.

• Teamwork Skills: Teamwork skills are also very important for NGO Management students. This is because all NGO employees have to work in close contact with each other to effectively complete their required functions. NGO employees must get along with one another to be able to serve society well.

• Empathy: NGO workers work with affected and unfortunate people to make their lives easier. To be able to do that, NGO Management students must be empathetic about the cause they work for and work diligently. Empathy is very important for these employees so that they can serve the people and make them happier.

• No Profit Motive: NGO Management students must know that NGOs are non-profit organizations, and therefore, the pay will not be very great. Their sole motive must be to help the society and not to find ways to earn money or profits. This is a particularly important skill for NGO workers.
