What is Sports Management

Everyone is relatively aware of the sports industry in India, but fewer know about the course designed to train professionals for the same. Sports management courses are still a very new concept to many, and the course is available in very numbered institutes.

The sports management courses train students to understand the business dynamics and applications of the sports industry. As the industry's turnover increases every year, so does the requirement of trained professionals for various jobs.

As one moves up the ladder, numerous professionals are playing their part behind the screen consisting of sports administrators, facility managers, information experts, and sports economists.

The sports management course empowers students to take up a career with organisations ranging from college level to professional sports organisations.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Sports Management

The eligibility criteria for undergraduate programs and postgraduate programs are different, and students must fulfil them all to get admission to any Sports Management course. The following documents are the most common, though the university might have other requirements as well. 

For Undergraduate Sports Management Courses –

• Marksheet of 10+2 to show the completion of class from any recognised board.

• Minimum percentage required by the university or college in 10+2 class

• Universities also accept students who apply through National level exams conducted for these courses.

For Post-Graduation Sports Management Courses –

• Students should have a minimum score of 60-80 TOEFL, IELTS (6.5).

• A UG degree from a recognised institute with the minimum GPA required by the university.

• The Bachelor's degree should be in either Sports, Business or other related subjects. 

Sports Management Entrance Exams –

Management Aptitude Test (MAT)- It is a national level test conducted for MBS in various management courses. It is conducted 4 times in a year in February, May, September and December. Students can either opt for pen and paper or online mode via a computer.

Common Admission Test (CAT)- CAT is conducted for admissions in India's top IIMs at a national level. Selected students can apply for various MBA courses, including Sports Management. The exam is computer-based and is conducted in November.

Common Management Admission Test (CMAT)- CMAT is also a national level test conducted for admissions in management courses approved by AICTE. It is a year-round exam, and the mode of conduction is online. Students can also take up a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM) course.

After clearing the exams, the admission process begins, and students have to wait for various cut-off lists released by the institutes. But some might have to appear for the test conducted independently by the institutes.

1. Time Management

Time management is an essential skill for any job, but in sports management, it is the key factor as a lot of things happen daily. So, to become successful one must learn to manage their time.

2. Organisation

All the jobs in the world come with lots of paperwork and files. And knowing what to find reduces half the work stress, especially in an industry where immediate access is required.

3. Analytical Mindset

Simply cracking the interview is not enough in such a competitive industry where people can easily be replaced. Having an analytical mindset and able to observe patterns out of chunks of data. This way, the aspirants can be of great advantage to their companies and secure their place.

4. Creativity

Creativity is something that helps people to appear different from the crowd. From writing a resume to giving an interview, creativity, and a unique style are preferred. Most of the time, job interviews are given to people with the most creative resume.
