The Ph.D. programme at IISER Pune is a blend of classroom curriculum, mentoring undergraduate students along with a major research component. The research scholars are expected to complete at least 16 credits of course work within the first two semesters followed by a comprehensive examination to assess the student’s candidacy for Ph.D. They must deliver a departmental seminar and undertake tutoring activities in at least two undergraduate courses (theory and/or laboratory courses). In the first two years, the student will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Upon the successful completion of the comprehensive examination and two years of JRF, the student will be eligible to receive a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) for a maximum of another three years. The research progress of the student will be monitored by a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) involving the thesis supervisor (Convener) and two other faculty members. Upon completion of satisfactory research work (as construed by the RAC), the research scholar will deliver a research seminar regarding his/her work before the submission of the thesis. The submitted thesis will be evaluated by external examiners before the conduct of viva-voce. Successful open defense of the thesis will lead to the award of Ph.D. degree during the annual convocation.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate should have a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in the majoring subject) or a CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC, ST and PwD/VH candidates) in MSc or BTech/BE.

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

Admission Details

The candidate should satisfy at least one among the following mandatory criteria:

(a) Qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with a score in the CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF category, valid at the time of admissions in August 2024. OR

(b) Holds a rank equal to 500 or better (625 or better for candidates in the reserved categories) in GATE or JEST PhD Physics. This rank should be valid at the time of admissions in August 2024. OR

(c) Holds an INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (The candidate should possess a provisional selection letter for PhD fellowship at the time of the interview.) OR

(d) BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

(Students currently in the final year of the eligible programs are welcome to apply. If the candidate is shortlisted after the final interview a provisional admission will be offered.

College Infrastructure

The college has fairly good inrastructure. The hostel rooms are equipped with ethernet ports to facilitate good internet connectivity. However, routers are not allowed in the hostel rooms. The labs are well euqipped with safety features and good air flow.
