The institute was initially named Bengal Ceramic Institute Calcutta and later renamed to College of Engineering & Ceramic Technology. Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology, Kolkata admission is offered for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. GCECT Kolkata admissions are offered to B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D programmes. For GCECT Kolkata admission to B.Tech programmes, candidates have to appear for the entrance exam- West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE).
Admission to the B.Tech lateral entry is offered based on candidates' performance in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Lateral Entry Test (JELET). GCECT Kolkata admission to the M.Tech programme is done on the basis of candidates’ scores in the entrance exam- the West Bengal University of Technology Post Graduate Entrance Test (WBUT PGET). Aspirants who are GATE qualified and want to be admitted to the M.Tech programmes also need to appear in WB PGET and they will get weightage for their GATE score.

Following this, a merit list is prepared and based on the merit list candidates have to attend the WBUT PGET counselling. For Ph.D admissions at GCECT Kolkata, the candidates are required to appear for a written test conducted by the MAKAUT. Later, candidates who passed the written test should appear for an interview. Final admission is confirmed after verification of documents and the Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology admission fee payment.
Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology, Kolkata offers six undergraduate programmes. The course duration of the GCECT Kolkata B.Tech programme is 4 years and the course duration of the B.Tech Lateral Entry is 3 years.

Among the 3 mentioned universities GCETTS do not have that good placement opportunities in comparing to the other two.
GCELT gets good placement opportunities as 80% students get the placement opportunities with highest salary of 7 lakhs PA and also 90% of students get placed with internship opportunities as well.
GCECT is definitely the best with placement opportunities as it gets students placed with top Multi National companies such as Accenture, Wipro, TCS, IBM, etc with highest salary packages of 7-8 lakhs PA
