Hi there,

My friend was at Srinagar last year, actually the ece department is good and the placement is also good but sometimes due to some political riots outside campus is not safe as such although inside the campus you are safe.

The riots also happens in a while only, last year due to such issues my friend was sent to his hometwon and the college was closed for some weeks.

The internet access is also average.

I hope this helps

Hello there,
According to the formula, [100-86*869010], your All India Rank in JEE Main is 121661 approximately. Since you have not mentioned your category, I'm assuming that you are from the general category. Now, analysing the previous year data, the cut-off rank for various branches in NIT Srinagar were:
CSE- 86828
EE- 98474
ECE- 139727
IT- 137795
ME- 133547
These are the Home state ranks for the general category. You have good chances of getting a seat there, except in CSE. Also note that the cut-off rank changes every year depending on the difficulty of the paper, and the number of candidates appearing for it.

You can check the cut-off ranks for all categories in the link given below:

Hello aspirant!!

IT companies usually offer an average package of 3–4 LPA. However, placement record is quite good as most of the students get placed. I remember in our batch (2011), students from other branches such as civil, electrical and electronics were also placed in IT companies.

A few companies did offer a higher package(nearly 10-12 LPA) but they were foreign companies. If you want to aim higher, you should always look for off campus opportunities. I remember, one of the student from CSE department got a 72 LPA offer from a US company. Saying that, it obviously requires more efforts and you do need to do a lot of things outside of your course such as joining internships in reputed companies, developing software, doing online certifications etc.

Be careful in choosing the company as some companies back out even after you are placed. You cannot sit in for placement twice as the college rules don't allow it. Be absolutely sure of the company you sit in. For an IT student, placement shouldn't be much of an issue. Target high and work hard to achieve your goals.

Hope this was helpful.

All the best.

Hello aspirant!!

Pros

  • You will have a NIT Degree and an NITIAN tagname.
  • You can get in even with a low JEE Mains rank.
  • All the basic perks of studying in a NIT - Techfests, Scholarships etc.
  • Beautiful sceneries in and around the campus and the campus is based on the banks of Dal Lake.
  • You will have some new experiences and great stories to tell.
  • As it's in Kashmir, there's many places to travel and for sightseeing.
  • You don't have to study much to get good grades.
  • Quite a lot of holidays and free time. You will see two or three holidays on average due to strikes per month. And you can't beat 3 months winter vacation and nearly a month of semester break in summer.
  • Placements are quite good. Most of the students from ECE,CS,IT,MECH get placed. Not so much for other branches.

Cons

  • Transportation problem. There's no direct train service to Srinagar. To get to Srinagar, either you have to take a flight or a 10hr road journey from Jammu.
  • Extreme climate. It will get very cold in winter from October.(It can be a pro if you prefer cold climates) Sometimes you’ll observe all the climatic conditions in a single day.
  • Hostile environment. You will see strikes and protests frequently and they sometimes affect your academics and placements. You will see an anti-India sentiment among the locals.
  • Some teachers but not all, bias and give preference to local students. It's increased even more after the protests by students in April. Senior faculty are exception.
  • Infrastructure and faculty are not up to the mark. Labs only have a few working equipment. There are not enough teachers and more than 95% of the staff are locals. Mess food is average. Hostels are mostly okay. College has shown a lot of improvements in infrastructure in the last few months, also construction of a prefab hostel is underway.
  • Kashmir is not always how it's portrayed in the news. College is quite safe and you don't have to worry about safety. But it's not entirely safe either, you can never know when things might go bad outside.
  • As most of the internships are in summer, you are at a loss here as the summer break in NIT Srinagar is at July and only around 20-25 days.
  • Teaching is not at par with other NIT's. You can study for yourself even without attending the lectures. But there's a minimum 75% attendance requirement(which is not that strictly enforced).
  • Because of the connectivity and hostile conditions, some companies refuse to visit NIT Srinagar.
  • Fee used to be a lot less when I joined. But it has been considerably increased now and also there's travelling expenses to add which increases it even more.

These are some pros and cons of joining NIT Srinagar .

Hope this was helpful.

All the best.

Overall a nice experience

Facilities are okay, with classrooms that are functional and equipped with WiFi and smartboards. Laboratories meet basic needs. The library is large but lacks some newer resources. Sports facilities are acceptable, though not always fully utilized. Hostels need better cleanliness, and food needs improvement.
