Solar Energy

The Solar Energy online course is an eight-week course offered by the Delft University of Technology- one of the largest technological universities in the Netherlands. This introductory course explores the different technologies, and principles underlying photovoltaic conversion, solar module constructions, and solar cell fabrications.

Students will receive an online ebook “Solar Energy- Basics, Systems, and Technology” at no extra charge for learning. The Solar Energy Certification Syllabus assigns one topic per week, replete with assignments, exams, exercises, and lecture videos. Moreover, this online course focuses on electricity generation from solar energy. The latest advancements in solar technology such as crystalline silicon, thin films, and other lab-scale examples are also covered.

Mr. Arno Smets from the Delft University of Technology instructs the course. He was the first recipient of the Exceptional Contributions by edX to online teaching and learning. Mr. Smets teaches Computer science, electrical engineering, and mathematics. Lastly, a verified Solar Energy Certification is also available to learners after completing the program and may a minimal required fee.

The candidates may enroll in this course for free or by paying a certain amount of money. There are 2 tracks namely verified or audit track which offers direct access to the course materials. If the candidates opt for the verified mode they are entitled to unlimited access and if they opt for the audit access, they are going to receive only limited access to the course materials.

Solar Energy Photovoltaic Systems

Offered by

Delft University of Technology via Edx
Certificate

Solar Energy: Photovoltaic (PV) Systems

With the Solar Energy: Photovoltaic (PV) Systems program, candidates will learn about the process of turning solar cells into full modules and applying these modules to PV systems. The curriculum covers the design of different photovoltaic system types, such as residential-scale systems (on-grid and off-grid) and utility-scale solar farms.

The Solar Energy: Photovoltaic (PV) Systems certification course will help candidates learn about the functions and operations of different components involved in PV systems, including batteries, inverters, DC-DC converters, and how they interact with the grid and the modules. They will then know how to work with these components and incorporate them while designing, planning, and installing real PV systems.

After completing the Solar Energy: Photovoltaic (PV) Systems training, candidates will better understand a PV system’s performance under different solar energy applications. They will also know how to estimate the energy yield for the system that their client is looking to install.

This course is a part of TU Delft’s Solar Energy Engineering MicroMasters program, which covers all relevant aspects of photovoltaic energy conversion, systems, and technologies. There are two modes for the learners to join the programme, namely, verified and free audit. In the former mode, the learner will have a certificate of completion and unlimited access to the programme. In the latter mode, the candidates will get access only for a limited period.

Solar Energy: Integration of Photovoltaic Systems in Microgrids

A microgrid is an electricity distribution system that is locally operated in a regulated way and includes electricity users and electricity producers (renewable electricity generation). More often than not, photovoltaic systems are integrated into microgrids. To learn more about this integration process, take the Solar Energy: Integration of Photovoltaic Systems in Microgrids certification course.

The Solar Energy certification syllabus covers topics like AC microgrids, DC microgrids, smart grids, virtual power plants, distribution networks, control strategies, markets, components, power electronics interfaces, etc. All this material is available free of cost for all learners for a limited period of time. However, verified learners get access to more advanced content, practical exercises, simulation assignments, and peer reviews.

To learn about photovoltaic energy conversion systems and technologies, and all other aspects of photovoltaics (relevant from a physics and engineering standpoint), take the Solar Energy Engineering MicroMasters program. The Delft University of Technology offers both the Solar Energy: Integration of Photovoltaic Systems in Microgrids online course and the MicroMasters program.
