Set up in 2017, the Swayam portal aims to provide the best teaching and learning resources to all. There are numerous Swayam online courses and Swayam online degrees for ninth-grade students to post-graduate level learners available on the Swayam portal.
If any learner wants to earn a Swayam certificate after pursuing Swayam online courses or Swayam certifications, he/she needs to register for the exam by paying the exam fee and then appear for the exam in the respective centres. Learners can also take Swayam free courses and certifications and develop a variety of skills. Students can find a vast Swayam course list on the Swayam portal or by visiting the swayam.gov.in courses.
Under Swayam, there are nine national coordinators across different categories of school education, out-of-school education, undergraduate education, and post-graduate education. The national coordinators are AICTE, NPTEL, UGC, CEC, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, IIMB, and NITTTR. All Swayam online courses and Swayam certificate courses are free of cost.

The Swayam portal was developed jointly by MHRD, AICTE, and Microsoft. Swayam collaborates with about 203 institutes, organisations, and universities to offer Swayam online courses and Swayam MOOC courses, Swayam course certificates, Swayam diploma courses, and Swayam online degrees.
The Swayam portal also has collaborations with CBR Network, NCERT, NIOS, RIE Bhopal, JNU, IGNOU, NIE Chennai, St Xavier's College, Kolkata, DHSGSU Sagar, TISS Mumbai, and various IITs, IIMs, and IISERs.
