Cardiology and Thoracic Science Entrance Exam
For pursuing the Cardiology and Thoracic Science course at the undergraduate level, one can take direct admission in B. Sc in Cardiology and Thoracic Science, or one can pursue an MBBS for the same. Maximum institutes offering this course admit the students according to their performance in their 10+2 examination. However, some take their relevant entrance exams for Cardiology and Thoracic Science followed by a personal interview session.
To pursue an MBBS degree, one needs to clear NEET-UG and will get to choose the college according to the rank and counselling afterwards.
For pursuing the Cardiology and Thoracic Science course in postgraduate level, one needs to qualify any of the following Cardiology and Thoracic Science entrance exam:
1. NEET-PG
Cardiology and Thoracic Science Admission varies from one college to the other, but most colleges admit the students according to their performance in the 12th Board Exams.
Some other institutes take a relevant entrance examination which candidates need to qualify and then clear the round of personal interview.
For the postgraduate courses, Cardiology and Thoracic Science Admission is majorly based upon the rank secured in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test—Super Specialty. Candidates need to qualify this examination and secure as low a rank as possible. It is followed by a round of counselling sessions based on the percentage or percentile of marks obtained in the entrance test.
NEET-SS is a single-window examination conducted for all the Super Specialty DM/M.Ch pursuing courses as stated by the Indian Medical Council Act. No other examination is considered to be eligible for pursuing the course at the postgraduate level.
However, a few universities do not consider qualifying NEET-SS to pursue post-graduation in Cardiology and Thoracic Science. Some of them are mentioned as follows:
ii. JIPMER, Puducherry.
iii. Sree Chitra TIRUNAL IIMST, Trivandrum.
iv. NIMHANS, Bengaluru.
The scope of Cardiology and Thoracic Science Course is ideally suited for candidates who wish to grow in the specialised field. With the increasing pollution levels and stress, the instances of ailments in the heart, chest, and lungs is on the rise. This has created a huge requirement for medical professionals in cardiology and thoracic science careers. After completing the required education, one can start working as a junior doctor and then slowly climb their way through to become a senior surgeon or consultant. Other careers in Cardiology and Thoracic Science options like lab technicians are also available. If one finds the true calling in the field of education, then they can apply their skills as a lecturer or teacher in a medical school. Employment opportunities are available in private as well as public sector organisations.
Like most medical fields, cardiology and thoracic science is witnessing increasing resource allocation towards research for better and effective treatment options. Use of robots to complete complex cardiac procedures has achieved significant popularity in the last decade. Some of the latest trends in cardiac and thoracic science can be summarised as follows: -
Increased use of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
Artificial Intelligence and cardiovascular medicine
Cost effective treatment options
Increased use of Direct Oral Anticoagulants in atrial fibrillation
Latest paradigms in management of Mitral Valve Regulation
Job Profiles
After pursuing a Cardiology and Thoracic Science course, candidates can apply jobs for any profile as mentioned below:
Job Profile | Job Description |
Cardio-Vascular Technicians | These technicians use several procedures as well as instruments for diagnosing and treating heart diseases and vascular problems. These technicians perform electrocardiograms (EKGs), and also set up the stress tests along with the Holter monitoring. As they gain more and more experience, and training, you can perform more diagnostic tasks, using sonography and such other non-invasive procedures and advanced techniques of life support. |
Medical Sonographers | People having jobs in this role work with non-invasive diagnostics. Medical sonographers perform imaging procedures using non-ionizing, and high-frequency sound waves for creating an image which can be used instead of exploratory surgery or any other imaging that uses radiation. The general duties would include preparing patients, explaining to them the process of the exam, performing the exam procedures, and finally reporting the findings to the patient or a physician. |
Patients suffering from any heart-related issues are referred to the cardiologists by their normal physicians. Hello,
Hope you are doing great.
Answering to your question ,
No, you cannot pursue an MD (Doctor of Medicine) in cardiology after completing an MSc (Master of Science) in cardiology. MD is a medical degree that requires completion of an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent qualification. To specialize in cardiology, you would typically need to pursue a residency program in internal medicine followed by a fellowship in cardiology after completing your MBBS. Alternatively, you can pursue a DM (Doctorate of Medicine) or DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in cardiology after completing your MBBS and residency in internal medicine. An MSc in cardiology is more focused on research and may not provide the clinical training necessary to become a cardiologist..

Hi ishaan,
The salary varies with the reputation and city in which the hospital is present. Taking about the slasry of cardiologist, it depends upon the popularity and the status of the hospital. Many surgeons charge a high fees for the surgery and treatment while others donot. It depends upon them.
So, in simple words the salary is not at all fixed, it varies from person to person. Many hospitals have their fees structure for every procedure. Surely the fees varies as per the status of the hospital.
Government hospitals have lower fees for the procedure while private have the highest . It directly makes a hole in the pocket of the pateints.
I hope you understand my point.
Thank you and good luck:)

Chest is uncovered and a colourless gel is applied to analyse the sound vibrations with a transducer.
The technician moves the transducer across the various parts of the chest. The gel helps the transducer get views of the heart, its tissues and structures.
2D Echo is usually performed under the supervision of a radiologist and a cardiologist. It takes around 20 minutes to 1 hour of time to complete the test.
