What is General Surgery

General Surgery is a specialisation in medical science which focuses on surgeries being carried out mainly on the abdominal parts of a human body. In India, this specialisation is taught under the course of master of general surgery (MS in General Surgery). An MS general surgery is a three-year postgraduate program that can be pursued by students who want to become a surgeon in future. In order to study MS in general surgery, a student must have passed the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) with at least one year of the internship experience. Admissions to the course are based on entrance exams like A.I.I.M.S. and NEET.    

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of General Surgery

• Students applying for M.S. in General Surgery must have passed their 10+2 level with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics from a recognised school in India.

• Students must hold an M.B.B.S degree from an institute recognised by the Medical Council of India.

• Students must have at least one-year experience of the internship.

• Students must pass postgraduate entrance exams conducted by institutes and bodies with not less than 50 per cent.

General Surgery Entrance Examinations

• AIIMS PG Entrance Test: A.I.I.M.S. is one of the biggest medical institutes in India, and it is known for offering the best medical courses, including M.S. in General Surgery. AIIMS PG Entrance Test is conducted on an All-India basis, and students who have completed M.B.B.S/ B.D.S can apply for M.S exam.
  
  

• National Eligibility cum Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET PG): NEET PG is one of the biggest medical exams in the country that provides a gateway to the biggest medical institutes in India. This entrance exam is particularly for P.G. courses- M.D., MS or P.G. Diploma courses. Students who have passed M.B.B.S/ B.D.S can apply for the entrance test.
  
  

• Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER PG) Entrance Test: J.I.P.M.E.R. Puducherry conducts its entrance test for P.G. courses such as M.S., MD, and M.D.S. twice a year. The examination is quite popular and is taken by a good number of students who have completed their M.B.B.S program.
  
  

• Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (P.G.I.M.E.R.) Entrance Test: P.G.I.M.E.R. Chandigarh conducts its P.G. entrance test for M.S and M.D courses offered by the institute to students who have passed their M.B.B.S program with a yearlong internship.
  
  

• Common Entrance Test for Post Graduate Medical Colleges (CET PGMC): CET PGMC is a postgraduate medical entrance exam conducted by Pondicherry Linguistic and Religious Minority Medical & Dental Colleges Welfare Association to admit students seeking admissions in MD/ MS/ PG Diploma Courses offered by colleges under this entrance.

• Practical Skills: Surgery is not a simple task, and it requires a lot of patience and practice. Students must work on their practical skills, including manual dexterity, to get a better grip of the profession in their hands.
