Forensic medicine is the application of scientific knowledge for crime-related investigations. Also known as criminalistics, the course is a multidisciplinary subject and is well suited for individuals who want to build a career by solving crimes. There are various courses within the sphere of Forensic science like B.Sc. in Forensic science, M.Sc. in Forensic science and criminology, M.Sc. in Information security and cyber forensics, MD in Forensic medicine and toxicology, Postgraduate Diploma in Cybercrime Investigation and Computer Forensics, Postgraduate diploma in Forensic psychology and Diploma in Fingerprint Examination. Apart from criminal cases, forensic medicine also comes in handy while dealing with civil cases like finding the cause of death or injury for settling insurance claims or medical malpractice suits or determining the paternity of a child based on blood tests.
The eligibility criteria are different for various colleges. Here is a quick outline of the minimum requirements for the various courses.
For a Diploma in Forensic medicine, no entrance test is conducted. Candidates are given admission directly based on merit. For MD and B.Tech in forensic medicine following entrance tests are conducted:
The forensic medicine course aims to impart core knowledge in forensic medical sciences to individuals. The professionals from this course are responsible for conducting autopsies as and when required by the government bodies or police department. Other times they may be required to examine victims of abuse, harassment or any other legitimacy affiliation case. Some individuals may even choose to delve deeper and carry out research work in this field. After completing this course, candidates can choose to work as lab technicians, professors/associate professors/ resident, medical officer, manager-forensics, forensic psychiatrist, toxicologist etc. They take up employment in government hospitals, medical colleges, 7 universities, medical writings, private clinics, research labs etc. As of now, autopsies can only be conducted by professionals in government hospitals.
In India, forensic is an upcoming field, but outside India, it is well established and has greater scope. Forensic experts can start their career abroad as well after completing their education in India. However, for pursuing Forensic medicine abroad, it is better to have a degree from that country itself since law changes from one place to another.

Both have their own merits and demerits. However, it is recommended that you do an MD in forensic medicine after MBBS.

To be eligible for the MSc in Forensic Science course, candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in any science stream from an authorized university with a minimum cumulative score of 50% or an equivalent CGPA.
It is possible to be enrolled to the Master of Science course in Forensic Science after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. A B.Sc. MLT degree is one of the various academic backgrounds that students from M.Sc. Forensic Science courses can accept, though exact requirements and criteria may differ between universities.

The minimum qualification to apply is a pass in the 10+2 examination in Science from PUC/ISC/CBSE or an equivalent board with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as core subjects.
