Gastroenterology and Hepatology - Two main organs of our human body are the stomach and liver. They are required to work normally for human beings to live a healthy life. It is the responsibility of the doctors to ensure this. Gastroenterology course deals with the study of medication, treatment and rehabilitation of the human digestive system. A Hepatology course, on the other hand, is the study of medication, treatment and rehabilitation of the liver. The basic eligibility criteria for both gastroenterology and hepatology courses are an MBBS from a recognized university. People nowadays are looking for doctors who can help them with their problems and are qualified. Thus, there is a lot of scope in the field of medicine for people who are aware of the field well beyond the books.
There are two levels of the course, and only by completing the levels, one will be qualified to become a doctor. After completion of MBBS one can either take up MD specialization in Hepatology and Gastroenterology, or one can take up a DM after completion of MD in Hepatology and Gastroenterology and then join the hospital as Gastroenterologist or hepatologist whichever one wishes to pursue.
The eligibility criterion for the Gastroenterology and Hepatology course is similar to that of the other courses, and the aspiring candidate should qualify the criteria to get into the profession of medicine.
For Graduation -
For most of the medical courses, the eligibility criterion is similar. If one wants to pursue their MBBS, they have to take Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the 10+2 examinations. There is also a minimum cut off mark in certain universities/colleges. Most colleges/universities have similar eligibility criteria, and the marks for the admission are a minimum of 40-50 %. Also, some universities ask for the state level entrance exam like JIPMER and AIIMS for admission.
For Post Graduation -
The first thing one needs, to get placed for the PG course in medicine, is an MBBS degree from a recognized university/ college. One should also have a required percentile in the graduation to get into the top-notch colleges and universities. One also needs to be an MD in Hepatology or Gastroenterology for pursuing the DM in either one of the choices.

NEET – It is an exam which is conducted for students who wish to pursue undergraduate and graduate medical courses.
JIPMER – This is a university-level examination conducted by Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research for their medical and paramedical courses. It offers admission for MBBS, MD and MS.
AIIMS PG - The AIIMS PG exam is conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for admission to their MD course. For MBBS admissions, NEET scores are considered
For DM Hepatology one will have to attend the following exams
NEET SS – This is a valid exam for most of the college/universities for joining a DM course. It is a super speciality exam.
AIIMS - The AIIMS exam is conducted by the institute for admission to the postgraduate medical courses.
