Diabetology is a branch of Endocrinology that deals with Diabetes mellitus. Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease that causes a high level of blood sugar. In this chronic condition, there is an insufficient production of insulin which is responsible for moving sugar from the blood into cells. It can adversely affect various other body parts like the heart, brain, eyes and kidney. Endocrinology is an umbrella term that includes all the glands of the endocrine (hormone) system. According to the recent report produced by WHO (in 2015), over 69.2 million people in India are living with Diabetes out of which almost 36 million remain undiagnosed. Several estimates say that by 2030, this figure is likely to reach 100 million. Due to limited resources and lesser doctors specialized in Diabetes every year, almost 1.3 lakhs of people die. Studying Diabetology courses will ultimately enhance the in-depth understanding of diabetes. It will also help dealing with all relative clinical cases with ease. The course will impart knowledge about the management of diabetes and the treatment methods of life-threatening diseases.
This is where the diabetologists come into the picture. Diabetology opens the doors for a career as a licensed doctor who specializes in the field of Diabetes and usually has a background in endocrinology. Due to the changing lifestyle and more awareness for health-related problems, the demand for such specialists has been ever increasing. Diabetology course involves conducting the blood tests to detect and monitor the changes in the level of blood sugar in the patient’s body. The most important job of a Diabetologist is to not only treat the patients but also show them how to manage the disease in the best possible way.
