What is Gynaecology and Obstetrics

Gynaecology and Obstetrics (G&O) is a specialty that combines both these branches of healthcare to provide holistic care to women for their reproductive organs, before, during, and after pregnancy. It combines the medical and surgical skills required for a woman’s healthcare during her entire lifecycle. How are all human beings born? What is the source of life? Yes, it is the uterus and pregnancy. One of the most important organs of any woman’s body, it needs proper care and maintenance to function in the beautiful way that it does.

The uterus has the power to shed blood and produce life, which makes it all the more necessary to look after it and ensure that it is healthy and strong. This is where gynaecology and obstetrics come in. Gynaecology and Obstetrics deal with the health of the female reproductive organs like the uterus, vagina, ovaries, and breasts. Obstetrics looks after everything concerned with pregnancy, such as childbirth care and postpartum issues.

Mostly, these doctors are referred to as OB/Gyn’s and women visit them for any issues they may face with their reproductive organs. The job of a Gynaecology and Obstetrics is to assess these reproductive organs and provide diagnoses if any. Post that, they must also draft treatment plans for these women to ensure the safety and health of their organs.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Gynaecology and Obstetrics

Bachelor’s- Interested candidates:

●       Must have qualified 10+2 level from a recognized institution.

●       Must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Maths/Physics, Chemistry, Biology at the 10+2 level. English is a                        mandatory subject.

●       Must attain a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate.

Master’s- Interested candidates:

●       Must have an MBBS degree.

●       Must have achieved a 50 per cent aggregate in MBBS.

●       Must have completed the one-year internship. 

Entrance Exams

All students wishing to pursue MS in Gynaecology and Obstetrics must write NEET to be enrolled in an MBBS programme. After completing the registration procedures for NEET, the students will receive their admit cards, permitting them to write the exam. These NEET scores determine the institution of study for the students. The higher the score in the exam, the better the college. Selections are merit-based.

After the preliminary selections, the students are called for rounds of counselling where they pick their institution from the list of colleges available to them.

After MBBS is completed, the student can apply for an MS in Gynaecology and Obstetrics. For this course, the colleges hold their examinations. NEET scores are also acceptable in certain colleges.

MBBS Exams:

• NEET: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is handled by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This is the compulsory entrance exam for all students that want to pursue medical or dental courses in India. Entry is provided in government, as well as, private colleges through this test. It contains a set of 180 questions and negative marking is applicable.

MS in Gynaecology and Obstetrics:

• AIIMS PG: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences conducts a yearly university entrance exam. This exam is written for admission into any medical or dental course provided by the college.
• JIPMER: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research provides an entrance examination for admission into all medical courses provided by the institution. Passing this test leads to entry into JIPMER.
• PGET: The Post Graduate Entrance Test is an entrance test for admission into all medical courses in the state of Karnataka and all colleges based in Karnataka. This exam is organized by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA).

Required Skillset for Gynaecology and Obstetrics

Gynaecology and Obstetrics is a field in medicines that combines two separate branches, i.e, gynaecology, and obstetrics. To excel in the field of G&O, one must possess the skills of a gynaecologist and an obstetrician. Other than good knowledge and skill in the field, some other soft skills required are:

●  Listening Skills: An Gynaecologist and Obstetrics must have excellent listening skills. They must be able to listen to the patient’s problems and deal with them effectively. Only if they listen will they be able to identify the sources of all issues and treat them efficiently.

● Empathy: Gynaecology and Obstetrics graduates must also be very empathetic, especially since they work with the reproductive organs and pregnancy, which most women hold very close to their hearts. They must be sensitive and calm to soothe their patients and keep them positive.

● Comfortable Environment generation ability: As the job of an Gynaecology and Obstetrics is a little odd, since they deal with some personal organs and parts of a woman’s body, a sense of humour can go a long way. It helps the patient feel more at ease and creates a comfortable environment. However, one must not cross boundaries in the name of humour. Keep the humour tasteful.

● Problem-Solving: OB/Gyn’s must have good problem-solving skills and attention to detail. They must analyze issues carefully and comprehensively to create suitable treatment plans for the diagnoses.
