Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery- Bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery, also known as BAMS, is an undergraduate programme that is intended to make students familiar with the concepts of ayurveda and its use in the treatment of patients. Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery course blends ayurveda with the concepts of modern medicine and trains students in a combination of both as part of the course curriculum.
The Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery course teaches one of the oldest techniques of healing. Ayurveda practice is generally based on the curative properties of herbs and its medicines are renowned for the natural elements that are present in them. Ayurveda is considered as an alternative way of treatment which not only cures and prevents an ailment but also reduces the frequency of the disease. Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery- Degrees and Levels
Bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery course (UG): It is a 5.5-year course with a 1-year internship incorporated into it. Aspirants can choose this course after completing 10+2.
Master of surgery in Ayurveda (MS Ayurveda) (PG): It is a 3-year course. Candidates can go for this course after completing graduation.
Minimum and Maximum Duration of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery and MS Ayurveda courses
The minimum duration of bachelor of ayurvedic medicine and surgery course is 5 years or 60 months including a 12 months’ internship. The minimum duration of masters in ayurveda and surgery course is 36 months. However, the maximum duration of the said courses varies from college to college.
Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
Eligibility criteria for BAMS: Minimum educational qualification for enrolling in ayurvedic medicine and surgery course is qualifying class 12 boards or an equivalent exam with physics, chemistry and biology as compulsory subjects. Candidates must obtain at least 50% to 60% marks in aggregate for being eligible to take admission in an Ayurveda college but this may vary from institute to institute. The maximum permissible age for BAMS programme is 20 years for general category candidates and 24 years for reserved category candidates.
Eligibility criteria for MS Ayurvedic medicine and surgery: For being eligible to enroll in MS ayurvedic medicine and surgery, students have to score at least 50% in aggregate at the higher secondary level or equivalent exam from a recognised educational board. Only graduates with BAMS degrees awarded by the Central Council of Indian Medicine can apply for this course. Candidates must have completed an internship on a 12-month rotation basis. Those who have an MBBS degree can also apply for the master’s course.
Admission Criteria for Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Courses after Class 12
BAMS admission in India is made through entrance exams. The aspirants are required to sit for NEET-UG and qualify with the required percentile. After the publication of the result, a merit list is prepared by the competent authority and a counselling process is conducted on the basis of the merit list. Successful candidates, that is, those who have scored above the required cut-off for that year, are allocated seats in the counselling process for BAMS courses in various colleges.
Entrance Examinations for Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Courses:
There are different exams that are conducted for the selection of students for various courses in the field of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. Aspirants are selected through all-India NEET to secure a place in the BAMS course. For admission in the postgraduate programmes, candidates have to sit for JPGET, JPGEE and PGET exams. In the case of MS Ayurveda, the eligible candidates have to qualify in the relevant entrance examination followed by a series of group discussions. The exams conducted for admission in masters in Ayurveda are as follows:
JPGET: Joint Post Graduate Entrance Test to Ayurveda Vachaspati – MD/MS (Ayurveda).
JPGEE: Joint Post Graduate Entrance Examination for admission to Ayurveda Vachaspati.

Fees and Expenses of the Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery Courses
BAMS course fee varies from college to college; however, the range of course fee is Rs.10,000 to Rs.1,00,000 per annum. The average annual fee for MS Ayurveda course is Rs.2 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs.
