What is Sports Medicine

Sports activities are something which everyone should indulge in during their school or college times. It gives you good fitness and stamina. And studying about sports is also essential to know what it is all about and how it works. The ‘one’ course for a student who is passionate about sports to join is sports medicine. It is a branch of medicine that includes physical fitness and treatment and prevention of injuries that are related to sports and exercise.

Earlier a few physicians could diagnose problems related to a sports injury. But in the late 20th century the field of sports medicine emerged. The candidate who pursues Sports medicine, also known as sports and exercise medicine will also gain extensive knowledge about musculoskeletal medicine which gives them an idea about various injuries related to ligament, tendon, and bone problems.

There are two levels of this course you can either do Bachelors in Sports and Exercise Medicine or then go for an MD in sports medicine, or you can complete the MBBS degree and then go for an MD specialization in sports medicine. The duration of the bachelor’s degree is 3.5 years, and MD is 2 years. The aspiring candidate can complete their course in sports medicine and have a bright career in the field.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Sports Medicine

For every course, the college/university has certain eligibility criteria which the candidate needs to have. The eligibility criteria for Sports Medicine are as follows: 

For Undergraduate course 

• The candidate should have passed 10+2 in science stream from well-recognized board

• He/she should have an aggregate of 50 per cent in streams required by the university/ college. 

For Postgraduate course 

• The candidate should hold MBBS from a well-recognized university recognized by MCI.

• He/she should have an aggregate of 50 per cent and above. 

Most of universities/colleges have various entrance exams which the candidate needs to qualify for before joining the course. But many colleges/universities go for merit-based admission for sports medicine. If the candidate has to pursue their MD in Sports Medicine, they have to qualify, and they are:

NEET PG - National Eligibility cum entrance test is conducted every year for students who wish to pursue the postgraduate in the doctor of medicine, master of surgery and diploma courses to join the government or private medical colleges. 

In some cases, the college/university conducts entrance tests for candidates who wish to pursue the UG and PG courses at their university. 

Required Skillset for Sports Medicine

Every course that we take up has a certain skill set required by the candidate, and these skills are what make a candidate develop their caliber and performance. These are some of the skills required by the then-candidate who wishes to pursue the sports medicine course:

• Keen interest in sports – The first skill required by the candidate is a keen interest in sports. He/she should be passionate about sports, and this will make the students want to pursue the course even more.

• Stamina – Another skill required for a candidate is stamina. The candidate should have sufficient stamina to help out their colleagues and the players.

• Emotional maturity and strength – The field of sports are unpredictable as your team might win or lose, and the candidate should have the maturity to handle the situation.

• Strong intellect – The candidate should have immense knowledge of the field; only then he/she will be able to handle any problem.

• Confidence – The candidate should have confidence in himself/herself only then he/she will be able to learn the course smoothly.
