What is Urology

Urology is the study of the urinary system of the human body and its functioning. A person that completes the study of urology is expected to deal with problems and diseases related to the urinary tract and the organs linked to it.

The organs that these specialists mostly operate are urethra, kidneys and bladder. In India, Master of Surgery in Urology (M.S. in Urology) is the main Urology course. This course can opt for aspiring students after they have completed their M.B.B.S. and have gained some job experience.

Master of Surgery in Urology (M.S. in Urology) is the major degree that an aspiring student needs to complete to become a Urologist. 

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Urology

Eligibility Criteria for Urology Courses

To be eligible for DM in Urology, an aspiring candidate must firstly satisfy the eligibility criteria for MBBS (General Medicine) program. The main eligibility criteria that a candidate needs to satisfy for MBBS are: -

• The aspiring candidate must have passed Senior Secondary/ 10+2 with science stream subjects which are Chemistry, Physics and Biology (which includes Zoology and Botany).

• The student must also have English as the main subject for their Senior Secondary/ Class 10+2.

• The eligibility criteria that a student is required to meet while going for the M.S. (Urology) course are: -

• The candidate should have an M.B.B.S. degree from a Medical Council of India (MCI) recognized college or institution with a minimum aggregate percentage of 55%.

• The candidate must be permanently registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI) or any State Medical Council after graduation from M.B.B.S.

• The candidate must have professional work experience of at least one year. 

Entrance Exams for Urology Courses

NEET (PG)- National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Post Graduate) is a national entrance examination conducted for students who are willing to seek admission in post-graduate medical courses. 

MUHS PET- The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik organizes PhD. Entrance Test (MUHS PET) for students to be granted admission in their postgraduate medical courses.

Merit-based admission- Some institutions or colleges may also grant admission to students based on their academic performance at Senior Secondary level and the graduation level, apart from conducting their own entrance examinations.

Required Skillset for Urology

For each particular job, there are skills required. These skills come in essentially handy when a person does a job. The main skills that a Urologist needs to have are: -

• Patience – When a student looks up to take a job as a Urologist or as any doctor for that matter, the patience of the person is tested greatly. Students willing to be a Urologist should be extremely patient as they would deal with a lot of different kinds of people every single day.

• Teamwork – Students that are willing to study Urology should be able to work seamlessly as the part of a team because right after their studies, they would have to work in a team, communicating and coordinating with other team members.
